The fundamental steps in the Vocational Rehabilitation process are illustrated below:

Initial Vocational Assessment

Initial Vocational Assessment (IVA) is a fundamental step in vocational rehabilitation. The essential steps in an IVA are: meeting with the injured or disabled individual, his/her care providers, and the employer. The IVA allows the vocational rehabilitation consultant to assess the disabled worker’s return to work within their potential and limitations as well as provides information for required medical treatment and return to work accommodation. The IVA establishes objectives for rehabilitation and RTW plans.

Individualized Rehabilitation Plan

Based on the medical recommendations for RTW our Vocational Rehabilitation Consultant develops a written Individualized Rehabilitation Plan outlining treatment plan, time lines, and required support. The VRC works closely with the disabled worker, medical professionals, the pre-disability employer, the insurance company, and the union in preparing the employee for return to work.

Return to Work (RTW) Plan

Once a disabled worker regains medical stability, a Vocational Rehabilitation Consultant designs a RTW plan outlining return to work duties, schedule, and the required support. Once the plan is approved by a treating medical professional, the VRC works closely with the employee and the employer in helping the employee to return to productive employment. The RTW plan is one of the most important steps in the return to work process.

Employability Assessment (EA)

Employability assessment is the process of assessing an individual’s employment potential and helping them develop a realistic and achievable employment plan if employment is possible. The EA identifies potential occupation goals, provides recommendations for skills upgrading, provides labour market analysis, and develops recommendations for return to paid employment.

The EA involves gathering information on individuals’ work history, education and training, skills, occupational interests, medical limitations and abilities as well as comprehensive analysis of the labour market and employment outlook.

The EA can also measure an individual’s employment potential before and after an accident, with a view towards determining the impact of the accident on the worker’s employability. Our EA reports and expertise have been used successfully in legal and quasi-legal venues.
